How to Carry Binoculars While Hiking (and Stop the Swing for Good)

On flat pavement, binoculars on a neck strap are manageable. On a trail (stepping over roots, dropping off a rock shelf, leaning forward on a climb), they become a pendulum. You instinctively grab them or tuck them under an arm, which means constant management of a thing that should be invisible until you need it. Over three or four hours of moving terrain, that constant awareness adds up to real fatigue.

Two straps from the binocular body run up to your shoulders; the binoculars sit flat and still at sternum level regardless of terrain. Three Ways Hikers Carry Binoculars

Most hikers end up at one of three setups, often in this order:

Does a Harness Work With a Backpack?

Yes, with one thing to sort out the first time. Most chest harnesses sit at sternum level, between your pack's shoulder straps and your pack's hip belt. The binos land right where you want them, and the harness straps run over your shoulders alongside or under the pack straps.

Where people run into problems: heavily padded pack shoulder straps can compress the harness against your chest. The solution is to route the harness straps over the pack shoulder straps, not under them. It takes thirty seconds to figure out and then it is never a problem again.

Pack sternum straps are the other potential conflict. If your pack's sternum strap sits at the same height as the bino harness magnets, you will need to route around one or the other.
