The result is that a hunter trying to figure out whether their 10x50 glass fits a specific harness before buying has to dig through Q&A sections, forum threads, and return policies. The measurement that actually matters
When people talk about binocular size, they usually mean the magnification and objective lens diameter, as in "10x42" or "12x50." The second number (42, 50, 56) tells you the objective lens diameter in millimeters. That tells you a lot about light-gathering capability, but it does not directly tell you the harness size you need. A bigger objective lens diameter does mean a bigger, taller binocular body in most cases, but two 10x42 binoculars from different manufacturers can have meaningfully different body heights.
The measurement you need for fitting a bino harness is body height: the distance from the objective lens end to the eyepiece end when the binos are in their folded/closed position. This is the number that determines whether the lid closes. Width matters too, but most chest packs in the forward-fold category are wide enough that width is rarely the binding constraint.
How to measure your binoculars
- Close the binoculars to their folded position (the shape they take when you carry them).
- Stand them objective-end down on a flat surface.
- Measure from the flat surface to the top of the eyepiece housings. That is your body height.
- Measure the widest point across the barrel hinge. That is your body width.

How the LT1 and LT2 fit
The LT1 and LT2 main compartment measures 6 inches wide by 7.1 inches tall. Here is what that means across bino classes:
- 8x42 and 10x42 class: These binos will fit the LT1/LT2 with room to spare. Most 42mm-class glass has a body height under 6.75 inches; at 7.1 inches of compartment height, you have plenty of clearance for the lid to close cleanly.
- 10x50 class: Many 10x50 binoculars will fit, but you need to measure your specific glass first. If your body height is under 6.75 inches (some compact 50mm designs are), no problem. If it runs longer, you are working with less than half an inch of clearance. The lid will close, but you may notice some snugness until break-in.
- 12x50 class: Same guidance as 10x50. Measure your specific glass. Harnesses in this compartment-height range are documented as snug for 12x50 glass across several brands, so expect a tighter fit and confirm before buying.
- 15x56 and 18x56 class: These will not fit comfortably in the LT1 or LT2. A 7.1-inch compartment does not provide enough height for glass in the 8-inch-plus body range.
