8x vs 10x Binoculars for Western Hunting: The Real Decision

Why This Debate Has Not Died

GoHunt and most western hunting publications have pushed 8x42 as the standard western bino for years. The argument is solid: 8x is steadier offhand, gives a wider field of view, performs better in low light, and causes less eye fatigue over long glassing sessions. You will see more 8x42s than anything else on a western trailhead.

But the 10x counter-case keeps coming up on Hunt Talk and Rokslide threads, and it is not wrong. It is answering a different question. Here is how to figure out which question applies to your situation.

The Case for 8x

The practical advantages are real and consistent across enough hunters to take seriously.

Steadier offhand. At 8x, minor hand tremor is manageable. At 10x, that same tremor amplifies enough to cause eye fatigue and makes it harder to hold on a specific patch of terrain. If most of your glassing happens without a tripod, 8x will give you a consistently cleaner image because you are not fighting your own hands.

Wider field of view. A typical 8x42 gives you noticeably more width at 1,000 yards than a 10x42 in the same line, usually 60 to 70 feet more. When you are scanning for movement across a wide basin or a steep timber face, the extra field of view means fewer repositions and less chance of missing something at the frame edge.

Exit pupil and low light. The exit pupil on an 8x42 is 5.25mm. On a 10x42 it is 4.2mm. In the half-light of first and last shooting light, when animals are most active, the larger exit pupil delivers a brighter image to your eye. The difference is visible in real conditions, not just on a spec sheet.

Longer sessions without strain. If you are the kind of western hunter who sits a ridge for three to five hours systematically covering a drainage, 8x is easier on your eyes. Eye strain accumulates and eventually affects your ability to detect subtle shapes and movement at the edges of your field of view.

The Case for 10x

The 10x counter-case is not an argument that the standard advice is wrong. It is an argument that the standard advice is optimizing for a different kind of hunter.

More reach before pulling the spotting scope. In open western country, positive ID on a mule deer buck at 600 yards is a meaningful decision point. At 8x you might know it is a deer with antlers. At 10x you have a better chance of reading the rack and deciding whether it is worth closing the distance before you risk spooking him. Some hunters run 10x specifically to reduce how often they need to stop and set up a spotter on animals they are not sure about.

Long-distance tripod work. If you commit to a glass-first approach and run your binos on a tripod for extended sessions, the offhand-shake argument for 8x disappears entirely. On a tripod or a solid rock rest, 10x gives you noticeably more detail at distance with no meaningful downside. For hunters spending time in Wyoming basins or Montana prairie country where you are covering miles of visible terrain from one point, tripod-mounted 10x is a legitimate and well-supported system.

Mule deer in sagebrush. Elk in dark timber at 80 yards is an 8x situation. A mule deer buck bedded in sagebrush at 400 yards, where you need to count points and assess the rack before committing to a stalk across open ground, is a 10x situation. Different species, different tactics, different answer.

When you are not glassing all day. The eye strain argument for 8x assumes marathon sessions. If your style is moving-and-glassing, covering a lot of ground and stopping frequently to check specific cover pockets, you are not on the glass long enough per stop for that fatigue to accumulate. 10x works fine in that mode.

For most western hunters, the weight of the binocular is not what decides the magnification choice.

Which One Fits a Harness?

Both. A standard 8x42 and 10x42 in the same bino line have nearly identical body dimensions. Either fits the same harness without adjustment.
