How many game bags do you actually need for an elk?
Four quarters are obvious. The fifth bag is the one first-time elk hunters forget.

The four easy bags
An elk has four main quarters: two front shoulders and two hindquarters. Those are the bulk of the animal, and one bag per quarter is the standard. Four bags minimum just to get the quarters covered, and the hindquarters are the piece every bag gets measured against. Bone-in, a hindquarter needs a bag around 40 inches deep.
The bag people forget
The two backstraps run the length of the spine and are some of the best meat on the animal. Tenderloins, neck meat, rib meat and the trim you salvage around the pelvis add up to a real pile. Until you have pulled the backstraps off a bull and realized they fill a bag by themselves, it is easy to think four should cover everything. They do not. That is where the fifth bag earns its place, and where a hunter with four bags ends up improvising with a garbage bag.
Bone-in changes the size requirement
A small ultralight bag built for loose, boned-out meat is doing a different job than a quarter bag. Loose meat packs into almost any shape. A bone-in hindquarter does not: it is long, rigid and heavy, and the bag has to be deep enough to take it and wide enough to close over it. If you leave the bone in, the bag size is not negotiable.

Counts are for a standard quartering job. Warm-weather hunts where you split the hindquarter to speed cooling can use one more.
What else should a game bag do?
- Breathe. Airflow through the fabric is what cools the meat. 40D ripstop nylon does that while keeping flies and dirt out.
- Be visible. A reflective strip finds a staged quarter in a headlamp beam.
- Wash. Synthetic bags go through a cold wash and come out ready for next season.

Will these actually fit an elk hindquarter?
Yes. The quarter bags are 40" deep by 24" wide, sized around a bone-in elk hindquarter. The four big pieces of an elk each get their own bag.
I hunt whitetail. Are these too big for deer?
They work fine for deer. Elk sizing is the ceiling: 40" by 24" for the quarters and 17" by 29" for the smaller cuts. Front shoulders from a deer can share a bag, which leaves one spare.
Bone-in or boned-out?
Both work. Bone-in is faster in the field and the quarters hang cleanly; boned-out cuts pack weight on a long walk. This set is built around bone-in quarters and handles boned-out meat with room to spare.
Can I reuse them?
Yes. Rinse cold soon after the hunt, machine wash cold, air dry or tumble low. Hunters run the same set for multiple seasons.
How much space do they take in my pack?
